Furniture

A collection of bespoke furniture pieces designed and fabricated in the studio. A kitchen island, a media unit, a fitted studio workspace, and several other pieces, most of them in Jesmonite or built around it.

The Approach

Each piece here was designed to a specific space and set of requirements rather than adapted from an existing form. End-to-end control over design and fabrication means decisions about material, proportion, and detail can be made together rather than separately, and iterated on in the workshop rather than resolved before fabrication begins.

Extended use is the real test. These pieces have been in daily use and that direct feedback has shaped subsequent work: what holds up, what gets reconfigured, what gets remade.

The Kitchen Island

The largest Jesmonite piece in the house. The surface is cast Jesmonite in a colour series we developed specifically for it; we wanted something that moved between warm and cool depending on the light rather than sitting in one fixed palette. Getting the colour sequence right took several test pours; the final surface is the result of that process rather than a single predetermined decision.

The cast itself was a technical challenge. At 30 centimetres of depth, it is well outside the range where Jesmonite behaves predictably: the material generates heat as it cures and at that thickness there is a real risk of cracking or delamination through the body of the cast. Managing the cure rate, layer sequencing, and the mould construction to hold that volume without flex took more iteration than the surface work.

The Media Unit

The unit that holds the television and everything around it. Designed for the specific wall, the specific equipment, and the way that room actually gets used: storage that is genuinely accessible, cable management that doesn't require moving furniture, proportions that work with the ceiling height. Jesmonite used selectively for the top surface and visible panels; structural elements in timber.

The Studio Workspace

A dedicated workspace fitted out from scratch: benching, storage, tool organisation, surfaces designed to take abuse. Function took priority over appearance, with everything positioned for how the space is actually used. It has been reconfigured several times since the first build, which is how it should be.

Other Pieces

Several smaller items made alongside the larger builds: shelving, side pieces, storage solutions for specific spaces. Each is designed for its location and use rather than adapted from a generic form.
