This research direction considers how a digital composition might inform the placement of colour within a cast Jesmonite surface. The material’s flow and curing behaviour become part of the design, rather than simply a way to reproduce a screen image.
Plotter-controlled dispensing is one proposed avenue, with potential applications in furniture and architectural panels. The practical question is how a controlled pattern interacts with the less predictable behaviour of a poured material.
The related furniture work documents the studio’s practical experience with cast surfaces. Together, the two strands connect material tests with the objects those tests could inform.
