Precision laser engraving transforms ceramic glazing — micro-textures that affect how glazes flow during firing, selective light transmission, and post-firing surface detail beyond what conventional pottery can achieve.
Beyond Traditional Glazing
Conventional ceramic glazing creates beautiful but somewhat unpredictable surfaces. Our laser engraving research allows us to add precise, controlled surface modifications that interact with glazes in entirely new ways.
- Micro-textures that affect how glazes flow and pool during firing
- Precision patterns that create controlled light transmission in fired pieces
- Surface preparation allowing selective glaze adhesion
- Post-firing modifications that add detail without additional kiln cycles
Clay Body Explorations
Different ceramic bodies respond very differently to laser treatment:
- Porcelain — extremely fine detail, requires careful power control to avoid cracking
- Stoneware — more forgiving, allows deeper engraving and dramatic shadow effects
- Earthenware — responds beautifully to lighter treatment, perfect for delicate surface patterns
Lighting Collection
Our current focus is a lighting collection showcasing these techniques. Each piece combines thrown or cast ceramic forms, laser-engraved patterns controlling light transmission, selective glazing, and LED integration designed specifically for each form.
